Lawrence Realty working from Bahamas

Just another beautiful day in the Bahamas…while a thunderstorm passes I am working a bit.
Yesterday we celebrated a milestone birthday for Ron with a group of about 15 people by boating, snorkeling and enjoying the islands. We all boarded a dear friends powerboat and headed off to Fowl Cay Preserve, an underwater park where the sea life is protected and the snorkeling is beautiful. It was low tide and so the access to the reef was traveled with precision as the boat had about a 5 foot draft and there were a few reef heads showing. Once comfortably anchored between the coral heads, we had a minute swim over to several snorkeling locations. The area was swarming with fish… parrot fish, sargent majors, fairy bassets, just to name a few. The find of the day was spotting a ray nestled under a bit of sand, with tail, spine and eyes just visible. It had about a 5 foot wing span and we all enjoyed viewing him while he rested in the sand.
Next we headed to Guana Cay for lunch and the locally, well known restaurant/bar called Nipper’s. We lunched on the deck with a gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean, then body surfed in the the breaking waves and swam in the two tiered pool. After a full afternoon of water, sun, and Nipper’s Rum Punches, we boated home to regroup. The day ended delightfully with dinner on the deck of Bahama Beach Club where the staffed added a few touches to make it a very special evening.

Post from Treasure Cay, Abacos, Bahamas where life is good.

We are visiting the beautiful island of Grand Abaco located in the northern Bahamian islands east of Ft. Lauderdale Florida. The flight here showcased an incredible show of lightning storms. They were luckily way off course but provided entertainment for awhile. The weather here is perfect, the ocean warm the sand is fine and white and the time is definitely island time. We are staying at Bahama Beach Club, a first rate resort in the small island town of Treasure Cay.

Last night we enjoyed pizza night at the Tipsy Seagull, the local open air bar at the marina. It is the place to be on Thursdays as locals and visitors alike enjoyed delicious pizza and the singing Chris and The Burners. The dance floor was packed and including the graduating 8th grade class from a local school. It was definitely a fun night for all.

I be updating more from the Caribbean in the next few weeks.

Community Supported Agriculture

Here is our wonderful experience with the quality and freshness of community supported agriculture.

About a year ago we were visiting friends in Santa Cruz. While there, they picked up this box full of an amazing selection of fresh, local grown vegetables which they received thru Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSA is an organization of farmers promoting a model of growing and eating that creates a direct connection between you and the farm. We were thrilled to find a farm (Mountain Bounty Farm) in Nevada City that delivers produce to Truckee and immediately signed up. We pay up front for the season (summer or winter). They use the money to buy the seeds and grow the produce, when it is time to harvest the pick what is ready to eat each week and deliver it the day it’s picked. For about $25 a week we get a box full of the freshest, tastiest produce and enjoy a variety of produce based on what they planted and what is ready to harvest. Last fall we went to the farm for their fall harvest festival and had a tour of this small farm (about 4 acres) where our veggies our grown. To see the produce growing and meet the farmers in person was a beautiful circle true to the CSA model.

Squaw Ski Chalet, located in the Granite Chief subdivision, one of Squaw Valley’s few ski in ski out properties, is in escrow.

Last weekend of Spring skiing at Squaw Valley

This wonderful mother’s day weekend was full of fun at Squaw Valley.

Yesterday was the 19th annual Lake Cushing Classicand it was as eventful as ever. Only a few competitors actually crossed the pond which means there were a lot of cold and wet competitors being dragged across the pond by Ivan (our beloved special tickets guy at Squaw) in the inflatable kayak. This year’s winner was “Two Men and a Baby” or something like that. Three people came down on 4 skis. The two middle ones were monoskis sliced 3/4 of the way up the back with two bindings mounted on each. So yes, all three were skiiers were connected and they crossed the pond. So of the costumes this year included 4 penguins, a gorilla, Tigger, the Cookie Queen and Cookie Monster, two octomoms (yes, they had 8 baby dolls strapped to them), and so on. Since fewer contestants crossed the pond this year, there were a lot of really good and possible painful crashes. It was sun and fun for all.

Today, Mother’s Day, is also the last day of spring skiing for Squaw Valley. I went for a few runs and the snow is great. Quite a few people were hiking from Granite Chief up Emigrant, skiing Mainline Pocket, hiking up to the Palisades, skiing National then to Sun Bowl and over to KT22. A great day for some skiing and hiking. There is plenty of snow for more skiing this year, but there are not plenty of paying customers so Squaw will be closed for skiing until the next season. See you then if not sooner.

Squaw Valley Spring Report

The sun is shining, the spring skiing is amazing and there are plenty of fun things to do. Last weekend for Spring skiing which I hear is great… a friend hiked today from top of Shirley around Siberia to North Bowl for smooth spring snow. The Lake Cushing Crossing is tomorrow and should be eventful as usual. And then there is mother’s day, if you can’t be with your mother take a minute to remember the woman she is (was). Happy spring to all.

Interesting article in Wall Street Journal

The front page of the Wall Street Journal included an interesting article about a Texas bank demolishing homes in Southern California which it had acquired thru foreclosure. This must be part of the clean up process as banks continue to take on inventory. It really gets one thinking about the mortgage crisis that is upon us. On the positive side, I would like to think of this a sign of the bottom which means up from there.

Here in Squaw Valley, we have yet to see a foreclosure or short sale in the housing market. A few have occurred in the condo market, but overall we are doing quite well during the current economic times. Check Lawrence Realty for some great properties.

Squaw Valley Update

Snow is melting...

The grounds must be happy soaking up all the rain that has fallen in the last several days. More rain is expected for tomorrow and then the sun should be out for a few days. Yeah. Squaw has seen little ski traffic this week, in fact on Sunday all the lifts were closed due to the rain. When the sun shines there should be time for the last few spring skiing turns of the season.

Here’s a photo of KT22, the dirt is coming thru but with all the rain I would have expected more to wash off the last few days. Just goes to show how much snow we really had late this season.
